This Day In History (July 13)- Earthquake in California with a magnitude of 5.3

July 13, 1986 marked the day that a significant earthquake occurred on the California-Mexican border with a magnitude of 5.3.

This resulted in 29 people injured, and 50 buildings damaged in the Newport Beach-San Diego area. Tijuana, Mexico suffered as well, and a landslide occurred in San Diego County. The earthquake that caused 750 thousand dollars in damage was felt throughout Southern California (Santa Barbara to San Diego and all the way to Palm Springs) and in Yuma, Arizona as well.

Today, we are currently experiencing another element of mother nature-heat. The current heat wave that is sweeping across the country has resulted in a death toll of 39 people so far, and the weather service has issued warnings for 24 states. South Carolina experienced what felt like 106 degrees, and temperatures in the high 90s are continuing from New Jersey to Virginia. Since the beginning of July, temperature records have been “matched or exceeded at least 670 times” and people are being hospitalized by the scorching temperatures. However, humans are not the only ones suffering. 50,000 chickens have died in North Carolina, and a couple in Kansas lost 4,300 turkeys. Experts advise that going through a liter of water every hour should keep everyone healthy and prevent dehydration. It is hard to say how long this heat wave will last.
