This Day In History (July 8th)- Wall Street Journal turns 122

July 8, 1889 marked the birth of the Wall Street Journal.

It started as a 4-page afternoon paper that cost two cents, and has progressed into an award-winning 54-page paper that costs 2 dollars. What is considered the number one newspaper across the United States gained its popularity through Mr. Charles Dow and Mr. Edward Jones (the creators of the Dow Jones Average).  The newspaper was originally sold to the elite class, and had little to no competition. It was created seven years after Dow and Jones opened a shop in the basement of a candy store in Manhattan. The paper focused on political and economic disputes, and was quoted the “Republican Bible” by President Harry S. Truman. The Dow Jones average appeared in 1896, and the Journal began to prosper. Its popularity continued to grow, but hit a rough patch during the Depression in 1929. However, it began its recovery in the 30’s and 40’s, along with the Dow Jones. Circulation increased, and has turned into the newspaper it is today. Over time, the Wall Street Journal added color, photographs, four more sections, a Saturday edition, and can now be found online. It has won 16 Pulitzer Prizes, and is considered one of the best-written newspapers in the country. Circulation continues to increase, and the Journal remains the top newspaper in the nation.
