A lot of talk online today about French President Nicolas Sarkozy cozying up to U.S. President Barack Obama.
Found it interesting, considering that Sarkozy is considered to be pretty much a right-winger, though it could be said that the right wing in France is not exactly the same as the right wing in the U.S.
So I dug into the archives and found this article about Sarkozy and his election as president a mere three years ago.
During the weeks-long rioting in the suburbs of Paris in 2005, Sarkozy became a lightning rod for the youths who lived in the poor neighborhoods, as “Sarko,” as they called him, dubbed them “la racaille,” which roughly translates to “scum.”
