It is impossible to skim through a newspaper, of any day, month or year, without finding on every line signs of the most atrocious human perversity, coupled with the most astonishing claims to integrity, charity and good will, and the most barefaced statements about progress and civilisation. The whole newspaper, from the first line to the last, is but a web of horrors, a drunken orgy of wars, crimes, thefts, obscenities, tortures, crimes of states, of nations, of individuals … Everything in the world oozes crime: the newspaper, the walls, and man’s face. I do not understand how a clean hand can touch a newspaper without a shudder of disgust.
