1056: Byzantine Empress Theodora becomes ill, dying suddenly a few days later. As she had no children to succeed the throne, the Macedonian dynasty ends. Gee, succession rights sure can be … byzantine. Amirite?

1888: Mary Ann Nichols, the first of Jack the Ripper’s known victims, is murdered. The murder that launched a thousand stories, books, movies, TV plots and conspiracy theories.

1897: Thomas Edison patents the Kinetoscope, the first movie projector. In true Edison fashion, he didn’t actually invent it nor develop it, but whatevs.

1948: Actor Robert Mitchum is arrested in a Hollywood drug raid and is later convicted of criminal conspiracy to possess marijuana. OH NOES! Not POT!!!

1991: Kyrgyzstan declares its independence from the Soviet Union. Journalists and map-makers everywhere curse under their breath and put the name on a save string on their computers.
